History of the School

MALINAO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

(THE FRUIT OF A COLLABORATIVE ENDEAVOR)

School is defined as a community of students, parents, teachers, leaders and stakeholders working together for the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitude. It is the arena where human minds are liberated, a place where creative minds are produced that soon translate to a creative society. As such, with the creative conception of the powerful forces, the establishment of Balza Barangay High School (now Malian National High School) gave hope to the much-awaited dream of institutionalizing a secondary school right at the heart of the municipality of Malinao, province of Albay. It was in year 1969 when the good mayor of Malinao, Hon. Consuelo Kare conceived the plan of opening a secondary school in her municipality.

Determined to realize her plans, she donated a 3 - hectare lot to the Department of Education which she anticipated to be the site for a secondary school in the municipality of Malinao considering that the municipality of Malinao has no secondary school and those who would pursue a secondary education would still go to the municipalities of Tabaco and   Tiwi for a high school diploma. Mayor Kare went as far as the Central Office of the Department of Education just to have her plans realized.  She also sought for the help of the Elementary Grades Principal of Malinao Central School, Dr. Juan Bongao who was then more than willing to help in the opening of a secondary school in the municipality of Malinao. To ensure the opening of a high school in Malinao. Dr. Bongao did not release the credentials of those who graduated in School Year 1969 – 1970 and submitted the names of the said graduates as the first group of students of Balza Barangay High School.

And so, in school year 1970 – 1971, a class of 39 first year students and 29 second year students were formally opened in a borrowed classroom from Malinao Central School Site 2 situated at barangay Balza, Malinao, Albay. It was in the same year when these classes were housed in the Parish church of Malinao when a super typhoon hit so very hard the place. Nevertheless, classes in the parish did not stay long because the principal of Malinao Central School being assistant principal of Balza Barangay High School accommodated the students inside the campus.  For 5 years, Balza Barangay High School had to squat at Malinao Central School and there was a time when classes were prorated to different elementary schools just to house the growing number of students.  Three or four classes were adopted by Balading Elementary School and the other classes were housed at Malinao Central School Site I and Site 2.At least 6 elementary grades principals assisted in running the school.

The first was Dr. Juan Bongao who before his retirement became education supervisor I in Science, Dr. Teresita Diaz – Naz who became the Regional Director for DepEd Region V,  Dr. Jovena C. Borrero who became a District Supervisor before she retired from service,  Dr. Epifanio B. Buela, who became an education supervisor in English for Albay and Region V and later was catapulted to the position of Schools Division Superintendent, Ms. Salvacion Cerdeño and Mr. Prudencio Zamora who both became  district supervisors before retiring from service.  Since then, the school was headed by a teacher in-charge and the principal item was given only in school year 1994-1995.At present, MalinaoNationalHigh School proudly stands on a 15,620 lot donation from the family of Kare

From its humble beginnings to the present stature as a renowned learning institution in the 1st district of Albay, the school envisions to produce a generation responsive to the needs, challenges and demands of the 21st century.  With 51 teaching and non-teaching personnel and a rapidly increasing student population, Malinao National High School is determined to stand the tests of time to eventually become the Center of Excellence and Leadership in this part of the country.
